PhD Studentships and Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

PhD Studentships

Departmental Funding Currently Available

PhD Studentships in Statistical Science

Applications are invited for several PhD funding opportunities (one EPSRC studentship and up to four internally-funded studentships), to commence in September 2012.

The EPSRC studentship is tenable for 48 months and covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a stipend of £15,590 per annum for eligible UK residents. EU nationals who have not been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship may still qualify for a fees only award. The full rules for eligibility of students supported through EPSRC funding are available here.

The internally-funded studentships are tenable for 36 months and cover tuition fees plus a stipend of £15,590 per annum (based on the standard UK Research Council rate with London weighting). These awards may only be used to support students liable to pay tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. The procedure for determining one’s tuition fee status is outlined here.

Candidates should apply for the MPhil/PhD in Statistical Science in the usual way by completing the online form available here and, in addition, send a covering letter directly to the Department making their case for the funding. The covering letter should be sent to Dr Russell Evans (russell.evans@ucl.ac.uk).

More information can be found here.

PhD Studentship in Statistical Methodology and its Application

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in Statistical Methodology and its Application, available immediately.

The studentship is funded by a UCL Impact award held by Professor Mark Girolami in collaboration with Xerox Research Centre Europe. The award is tenable for 36 months and covers tuition fees plus a stipend of £15,590 per annum (based on the standard UK Research Council rate with London weighting). The award may be used to support UK and EU nationals only.

The research will be carried out in close collaboration with Dr Cedric Archambeau and Dr Guillaume Bouchard. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to visit Xerox Research Centre Europe on a regular basis.

More information can be found here.

PhD Studentships in Statistics: "Big Data" and its Applications

Applications are invited for PhD Studentships in Statistics: “Big Data” and its applications to Social Network Dynamics, Behavioural Finance, Business Analytics, Computational Retail and Healthcare, to start no later than September-November 2012.

The studentships are funded by the UK PhD Centre in Financial Computing and are tenable for 48 months (1 year Masters study followed by 3 years of applied research). The full award covers living expenses as well as tuition fees (subject to eligibility).

Successful applicants will work with Professor P J Wolfe and colleagues in Computational Finance to develop methods of modelling and inference for graphs and networks, including time series analysis and other aspects of “Big Data”, with applications to social networks and behavioural finance, business analytics, and computational retail and healthcare. The scale and nature of such datasets necessitates new analytical-computational approaches to statistical modelling, putting these problems at the forefront of contemporary statistical theory and practice.

More information can be found here.

PhD Studentship in Computational Biology and Comparative Genomics

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Computational Biology and Comparative Genomics: development of statistical methods for genomic comparisons of closely related species.

This is an interdisciplinary project with Professor Ziheng Yang (Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment) and Dr Hilde Wilkinson-Herbots (Department of Statistical Science).

More information can be found here.

UCL Funding

There are a number of schemes funded internally at UCL.

  • UCL Entrance Scholarships: Graduate Research Scholarships and Overseas Research Scholarships are available for UK/EU and Overseas candidates, respectively. Since the Graduate School will consider the ranked applications forwarded by all UCL departments, competition is stiff, and candidates must submit their applications for admission to the Graduate School by 31 December and the UCL GRS/ORS Application Form to the Department of Statistical Science by 10 February.
  • Departmental Scholarship for CSC Applicants: The China Scholarship Council offers maintenance funding for postgraduate research (PhD) students from China studying in the UK. The Department of Statistical Science may support a limited number of CSC applications from academically talented students by providing a scholarship that covers their PhD tuition fees. In order to be eligible for the scheme, prospective students should submit their PhD applications for admission to the UCL Graduate School by mid-January at the latest and indicate clearly that the CSC is a potential source of funding on the application. Applicants would then be informed by the end of February whether or not they will be considered for the tuition scholarship. This will provide enough time for them to complete the CSC scholarship online application form with the confirmation that they are to receive the tuition scholarship if awarded the CSC support.
  • UCL Impact Awards: The UCL Impact Awards fund PhD students for up to four years in partnership with organisations such as private companies, charities, and government institutes. In exceptional cases, UCL units may also serve as funding partners. Although typically a potential supervisor applies for such an award, it may be beneficial to have an admitted MPhil/PhD student identified as the beneficiary of this award.
  • PhD Scholarships for Financial Computing: The Department of Computer Science is offering four-year PhD scholarships to students interested in pursuing topics in financial computing, which will have a strong overlap with areas of statistics. Interested students should apply for admission to the Department of Statistical Science, but indicate clearly that they are interested in financial computing to be eligible for studentships by registering with the Centre for Financial Computing.
  • PhD Scholarships for Security Science: The Security Science Doctoral Research Training Centre has in the past offered four-year PhD scholarships to students interested in multidisciplinary security- or crime-related research degrees, which may have a strong overlap with areas of statistics. Should such a scheme be opened again, interested students should apply directly for admission to the Department of Security and Crime Science. It may be possible to discuss research topics with staff members in the Department of Statistical Science so that they may serve as research supervisors.
  • PhD Scholarships for Energy: The Energy Institute has in the past offered four-year PhD scholarships to students interested in energy demand reduction and the built environment, which may have a strong overlap with areas of statistics. Should such a scheme be opened again, interested students should apply directly for admission to the Energy Institute. It may be possible to discuss research topics with staff members in the Department of Statistical Science so that they may serve as research supervisors.

Applications to Research Council Fellowships

We welcome applications for fellowships sponsored by research councils and other funding bodies to be supported by the Department of Statistical Science at UCL.

If you are interested in applying, please feel free to contact a member of staff working in your subject area for discussions.

To apply, please send an e-mail to Prof. Sofia Olhede, Director of Research (s.olhede "at" ucl.ac.uk). Your e-mail must contain the following documents as PDF file attachments:

  1. CV (max 3 pages, include names and e-mail addresses of three potential referees)
  2. publication list (max 1 page)
  3. past research and research proposal (max 2 pages)
Important
  1. Note that it is your responsibility to check your eligibility to apply with the relevant funding body.
  2. Please try to give us at least 4 weeks notice (6 weeks in the case of MRC fellowships) before the scheme deadline so that if the Department decides to support the application we can work together to make the strongest possible case.

Please indicate the Fellowship scheme for which you want to be supported. You will be contacted after the internal departmental selection process to inform you of the outcome of your application. If successful, we will support your Fellowship Application to the relevant funding body.
