Dr Gianluca Baio to publish a book in the UseR! series

Dr Gianluca Baio has been commissioned to produce a book to appear in the Springer UseR! series. The book will present the R package BCEA, written by Dr Baio, that can be used to implement a Bayesian cost-effectiveness analysis.

Professor Valerie Isham to speak at international workshop at BIRS, Canada

Professor Valerie Isham will be an invited speaker at a workshop on Managing Fire on Populated Forest Landscapes to be held during 20-25 October at the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS), in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The workshop will focus on modelling wildfire impacts, fire management and the effects of climate change.

NIPS paper by Dr Alfredo Kalaitzis and Dr Ricardo Silva accepted for publication

Dr Alfredo Kalaitzis and Dr Ricardo Silva's paper “Flexible Sampling for the Gaussian Copula Extended Rank Likelihood Model” has been accepted for publication in Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS).  They have been invited to present their work at the NIPS machine learning conference, to be held in Nevada, USA in December 2013.

Department signs up to LMS good practice scheme for women in mathematics

The UCL Department of Statistical Science has registered as a supporter department of the London Mathematical Society Good Practice Scheme. This scheme aims to help departments interested in embedding equal opportunities for women within their working practices to take practical actions to improve the participation of women and to share examples of good practice with other departments. The scheme also offers support in applying for an Athena SWAN award for those departments seeking an award to recognise their work in this area.

Dr Ricardo Silva to speak at International Symposium being held at Osaka University

Dr Ricardo Silva will be an invited speaker at the International Symposium on Incomplete Data Analysis and Causal Inference, 22-23 September 2013, organized by Osaka University.  The symposium is sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Dr Gareth Peters publishes book as joint edited volume for Springer MCQMC 2012

The Monte Carlo and Quasi Monte Carlo Methods in Scientific Computing conference is a major conference in statistics and applied mathematics which explores the interface between Monte Carlo methods (MCMC and SMC) and Quasi Monte Carlo methodologies. This large international conference runs every two years and was most recently held in 2012 in Sydney, jointly organised by Professor Ian Sloane, Dr Josef Dick, Dr Frances Kuo and Dr Gareth Peters.

Professor Mario Wüthrich (ETH Zurich & Risk Lab) to become Honorary Professor in the Department

Professor Mario Wüthrich of the Department of Mathematics, ETH Zurich and Risk Lab Switzerland is a distinguished professor in the actuarial and risk mathematics research areas. As editor of ASTIN Bulletin and a member of the editorial board of the European Actuarial Journal, as well as possessing extensive practical experience, he will be a valuable research collaborator. Professor Wüthrich joins the Department as an honorary professor and will strengthen the goals and research of the newly formed Financial Risk, Insurance, Econometrics and Stochastic Finance research theme.

Dr Gareth Peters to visit Mathematical Laboratory of Clermont-Ferrand Univeristy

Dr Gareth Peters has been invited to visit colleagues in France at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, in a research group renowned for modelling and methodology in heavy tailed models and multivariate alpha-stable spectral measure estimation.  Dr Peters will collaborate with colleagues from University of Lille, Dr Francois Septier and Dr Laurent Clavier, as well as Dr Nourddine Azzaoui (Clermont-Ferrand), to develop new methods of understanding wireless channel information theory for capacity.

Dr Gianluca Baio to visit Department of Quantitative Methods, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Dr Gianluca Baio has been invited to visit colleagues at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) in October 2013. The researchers in the Department of Quantitative Methods work in the area of Bayesian decision theory in health care assessment.

Dr Gianluca Baio invited to speak at meeting of Dutch Chemometrics Society

Dr Gianluca Baio will give an invited talk on Bayesian statistics at a meeting of the Dutch Chemometrics Society, to be held in Utrecht in November 2013. In the talk, Dr Baio will present the philosophy of Bayesian statistics and introduce the computational aspects related to the process of making inference.
