Department of Statistical Science

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council are providing three years of funding to establish and build a UK wide research network on Computational Statistics and Machine Learning. This network will be led by the UCL Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning.

Dr Ben Calderhead’s paper “Sparse Approximate Manifolds for Differential Geometric MCMC” has been accepted for publication in Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems.  He has been invited to present this work at the NIPS machine learning conference, to be held in Nevada, USA in December 2012.

The paper “How to find an appropriate clustering for mixed type variables with application to socio-economic stratification” by Dr Christian Hennig and Professor Tim Liao (University of Illinois, Champaign, USA) will be read at an Ordinary Meeting at the RSS. It will be presented to the Society on Wednesday, 14 November 2012 at 17:00.

The Statistics Section of the Mathematics Department, Imperial College London and the Department of Statistical Science, UCL are hosting a Joint Statistics Symposium.
