Dr Afzal Siddiqui to visit Tokyo to model the management of alternative-energy technologies

Publication date:

Dr Afzal Siddiqui has received a FURUSATO Award from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science to visit the Tokyo University of Science (TUS) this summer. Together with Ryuta Takashima of the Department of Industrial Administration, he will develop real options models for optimal management of alternative-energy technologies. This collaboration will be bolstered via another visit by Siddiqui in early 2014 thanks to a TUS Invitational Fellowship.

Dr Gianluca Baio releases new R package to perform cost-effectiveness analysis

Publication date:

Dr Gianluca Baio has released a new R package for Bayesian Cost-Effectiveness models in the presence of structural zero costs. The package BCEs0 (which can be downloaded from CRAN) implements the framework presented in a forthcoming paper (available at the link below). BCEs0 allows the user to simply specify some distributional assumptions; then it writes a model code in the JAGS language to a file and execute the MCMC analysis in background. The results are stored in the current R workspace and can be used to perform the health economic analysis.

Dr Gianluca Baio to speak at the Joint Statistical Meeting 2013 in Montreal

Publication date:

Dr Gianluca Baio will present a talk on the application of the Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) to Epidemiology as part of an invited session at the Joint Statistical Meeting which will be held in Montreal (Canada) in the first week of August. In the talk, Dr Baio will discuss the application of econometric designs to investigate causal inference from observational data, as applied to the case of treatment effects in regulated health systems, such as the NHS, where guidelines are issued but not strictly adhered to by doctors and patients.

Dr Gareth Peters and Professor Tomoko Matsui to run 3 day workshop on Spatial Temporal Modelling

Publication date:

A joint workshop co-organised between UCL and the Institute of Statistical Mathetmatics in Tokyo will be running from 1-3 August 2013. It will involve several experts from the fields of statistical science, signal processing engineering and probability. There are a range of international speakers and guests attending so the sessions should make for some interesting discussions.

Professor Sofia Olhede awarded "EPSRC Developing Leaders Funding" for project in Characterizing Interactions Across Large-Scale Point Process Populations

Publication date:

Many ecological and other scientific datasets take the form of recorded events, such as time points of significant occurrences, or spatial locations of objects of interest. In statistical terms, such data represent point processes. The purpose of this research project is to study sets of interactions across multiple point processes, introducing novel statistical estimation methods for these interactions, with a specific focus on methods for applications at the forefront of ecology.

Dr Gareth Peters and Rodrigo Targino invited to present in special sessions at 7th International Conference on Computational and Financial Econometrics

Publication date:

Dr Gareth Peters will present in an invited session on Approximate Bayesian Computation, Sequential Monte Carlo Methods and Finance. His talk will cover aspects of SMC methodology when applied to ABC models in Risk and Insurance applications for Basel II as well as Non-Life Claims Reserving.
