First UCL Workshop on the Theory of Big Data, January 2015

Big Data has become ubiquitous in modern society. It challenges state-of-the-art data acquisition, computation and analysis methods. Much focus has been placed on the application of Big Data methods, less of a focus on the theoretical underpinning of the field.

Dr Gianluca Baio's research on Eurovision voting widely covered in the media

Dr Gianluca Baio's research on the voting patterns in the Eurovision Song Contest has received much attention in the national and international media. Dr Baio and co-author Dr Marta Blangiardo's (Imperial College London) paper, published in the Journal of Applied Statistics, has been quoted in the Channel 4 news website, The Economist, Liberation and Significance among others, and Dr Baio has been interviewed live on BBC radio Merseyside.

Drs Ardo van den Hout, Gareth Peters and Jinghao Xue nominated for UCLU Student Choice Teaching Awards

The results of the UCL Union Student Choice Teaching Awards 2014 were recently announced. The criteria for these awards are set by students, who also make up the entirety of the judging panel.

Dr Ioannis Kosmidis to give course at 1st R Summer School, Athens University of Economics and Business

The 1st R Summer School @ AUEB will take place at the Athens University of Economics and Business from 23-27 June 2014. The summer school is intended for Statistics graduates, MSc and PhD students, junior researchers, lecturers at universities, and professionals working in industry. It involves a week of intensive training in statistical computing with R. Participants are expected to have a good background in statistics and a strong interest in statistical computing.

Dr Gareth Peters to give organised invited session at CFE 2014

MSc Thesis Supervised by Dr Gareth Peters awarded Winton Capital prize

UCL graduate Dr Jonathan Cox (MSc Computational Statistics and Machine Learning) has been awarded a prize for his MSc research project supervised and jointly developed with Dr Gareth Peters and Dr Guillaum Bagnarossa (Molinero Capital Management). The Winton Capital Management award winning MSc thesis titled "Methodology for Joint Estimation of Static and Dynamic Parameters in Bayesian CVAR models" is available at the below link.

Research student Sam Livingstone awarded 2nd runner up best talk prize at 37th Annual Research Students' conference in Probability and Statistics

Sam Livingstone, a research student of Professor Mark Girolami and Dr Alex Beskos, gave a talk which was voted third best among those given at the 37th annual Research Students' Conference in Probability and Statistics at the University of Nottingham, 28th April - 1st May 2014.
