He will speak at the Bayes 2012 Workshop, organised by the International Biometrics Society, which will be held in Aachen (Germany, May 9-11) and at the 2012 Joint Statistical Meeting, organised by the American Statistical Association, which will be held in San Diego (CA, July 28-August 2).

Professor Mark Girolami to speak at PEDS-II Workshop

Publication date:

Professor Mark Girolami will be an invited speaker at the Workshop on Parameter Estimation for Dynamical Systems (PEDS-II) at Eurandom, Eindhoven, The Netherlands from 4-6 June 2012. The workshop aims at providing a meeting place for researchers and practitioners in the area of parameter estimation for deterministic and stochastic differential equations, who will review different methods used to tackle the problems arising in these fields, assess the achieved progress and identify future research directions.

Dr Serge Guillas awarded 30,000 euros of funding from PASCAL2

Publication date:

Dr Serge Guillas has been awarded 30,000 euros of funding from PASCAL2 (Pattern Analysis, Statistical Modelling and Computational Learning), a Network of Excellence funded by the European Union, for his proposal on the "Uncertainty Quantification Pipeline for Climate Models". This will enable month-long invitations of experts from the University of Texas at Austin, the Illinois Institute of Technology at Chicago, Carroll University in Wisconsin, the US Naval Postgraduate School, and from the research institute INRIA in France. These experts will collaborate with five UCL researchers and together take advantage of UCL's High Performance Computing resources for their simulations. This will lead to the release of efficient open-source code for uncertainty quantification of complex computer models.

Dr James Nelson awarded a £96k EPSRC grant

Publication date:

The project "Multiresolution Markov Models for Detecting Radial Patterns of Spicules in Mammograms" will develop statistical image analysis/computer vision methodology to improve the detection of cancerous abnormalities in mammogram images.

The grant will fund a research associate position in the Department. Along with Dr Nelson, the post-holder will be supported by Professor Stuart Taylor (from the Centre for Medical Imaging and University College London Hospital) and Dr Hela Sbano (a consultant radiologist in the Breast Unit at University College London Hospital).

Dr James Nelson involved in defence consultancy role

Publication date:

Dr James Nelson recently carried out consultancy for Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.
