Module Outline
The course provides an overview of the history of the world, from Ancient Mesopotamia to the Industrial Revolution. Subjects covered are necessarily selective, but the guiding principle is their salience as larger historical themes. Accordingly, much of the course considers European developments -- Greek philosophy; Rome and the idea of the citizen; the Middle Ages, church and state, and representation; Renaissance and Reformation; the Enlightenment. Nevertheless, there are themes that take the course out of Europe -- the development of writing; ancient Egypt and the hydraulic society; the 'desert religions' of Christianity and Islam; colonization and the American continent; and the history of China in comparative perspective.
