The Language of Revolution - A Multidisciplinary Discussion

Especially at an initial stage, events taking place in  so-called Euromaidan in Kiev have been widely described by international media and analysts as "revolution". This term was also attached to other supposedly major social and political breaking points in the recent history of the post-socialist space (Orange Revolution, Rose Revolution).

This workshop asks what does the term "revolution" imply for the understanding  of Ukrainian events and of broader dynamics in the CEE context? Can we identify a "language of revolution" used to describe and frame such events? What are the implications in terms of legitimacy of power and resistance that this language brings about?

The workshop aims to foster a multidisciplinary debate on the "language of revolution" and its relevance for Ukraine and the post-socialist space at large. Contributions from political science, linguistics, anthropology and political theory will serve as a basis for common discussion.

Speakers:
  • Neil Ketchley: Post-Doc, Politics and Sociology, University of Oxford
  • Marta Jenkala: Senior Teaching Fellow in Ukrainian Language, UCL SSEES
  • Taras Fedirko: PhD, Anthropology, Durham University
  • Jack Reilly: PhD, Political Theory, UCL SSEES
  • Olga Onuch: Senior Lecturer in Politics, University of Manchester
