UCL Aid For Tbilisi Flood - Charity Event

Organised by Georgian students from UCL SSEES who cannot be in Tbilisi in this moment of crisis, all the friends of Georgia are invited to this charity event.

Heavy flooding of the Georgian capital of Tbilisi has killed 19 and a number of people are still thought to be missing. After an intense downpour and high winds on Sunday a stream that runs through a section of Tbilisi turned into a sweeping torrent that destroyed houses, tore up roads and tossed vehicles into heaps of uprooted trees and rubbish. The flooding also killed scores of homeless dogs at a private shelter near the zoo, as well devastated the Tbilisi zoo and set the zoo animals free into the city. 

Georgian civil society has come together to aid the victims of the flood. Considering the fact that the damage is so huge, every little helps.

Speakers include: 

• Emeritus Professor of Russian and Georgian, Donald Rayfield, who has kindly agreed to give a talk about how Georgia has Recovered from Catastrophes in the past.
• UCL SSEES PhD candidate, Costanza Curro, who will talk about the Georgian hospitality as solidarity: some reflections from the field.

As more speakers are confirmed, updates will be posted on the Facebook and Eventbrite pages.

The Garnett Press has kindly agreed to donate the copies of Otar Chiladze's novels: A Man was Going Down the Road and Avelum in translation, with the proceeds from any sales (at reduced prices) going to Tbilisi Zoo.

A charity box will be available and guests will be able to donate money to help the victims of the Tbilisi flood.
