(Other people's) Hindsight is a wonderful thing: Tips on surviving early career academia from postdocs for PhDs

07 July 2015, 5:00 pm–7:00 pm

Event Information

Location

Room 347, UCL SSEES 16 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW

This Tuesday 7 July, SSEES is hosting an informal two-hour symposium on ‘surviving early career academia’. Ten current postdocs (from UCL, LSE, KCL, Queen Mary and Birkbeck) will share their top practical tips on how to prepare for the academic job market during a PhD, and successfully apply for fellowships.

The academic job market is brutally competitive. The earlier you start planning for it, the better. But what should you do during your PhD to improve your prospects in the postdoctoral job hunt? What kind of publishing strategy should you pursue? How many conferences should you attend, and which ones? When should you start applying for jobs, and where are the best places to look? What is it like to apply for the big fellowship schemes (Leverhulme, British Academy, Marie-Skłodowska Curie)?
