On June 9th, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies will come together to debate the EU referendum, specifically focusing on Eastern Europe, migration and security. Eastern European migration has been a feature of both the ‘in’ and ‘out’ campaigns’ and as the UK’s leading institution focusing on Eastern Europe, we intend to host an expert driven debate to analyse the facts, figures and place Brexit in a broader historical and political context in the run-up to the referendum. We have assembled a specialist panel of our academics to lead the debate, featuring Professor Jan Kubik discussing the broad Eastern European themes, Professor Anne White considering migration issues, Professor Martyn Rady to talk on historical regional perspectives and Dr Felix Ciută to examine the related security issues. The debate will also feature insight from the rest of our multi-disciplinary academic staff of the department and will be chaired by one the UK’s leading journalist’s Liam Halligan (The Sunday Telegraph).

The format that this debate is going to take is that the panel will give very short presentations, outlining their position based on their specialist knowledge, we are then going to move on to a set of questions that will be posed to the audience and panel alike drawing on the expertise of all those involved. As such, we are asking you to submit your questions in advance of the event, so please do so by way of email to c.roland@ucl.ac.uk. We will compile the responses and the panel will pick a number of them to be discussed on the night.

We invite the public and academic community alike to come along and engage with the issue, in order to decide for yourself whether Brexit is the right course of action.

Please note, this event will be recorded, so by attending you are consenting to potentially appear in the video recording.
