Module Outline

This course introduces students embarking on postgraduate study in History, Literature, or Social Sciences to Basic Linguistic Theory.

The theory is introduced via illustrations of how linguistic methods may be brought to bear in the analysis of sounds, syllables, words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and larger units such as catch-phrase, slogan, joke, advertisement, screenplay or novel.

Topics explored range from the anatomical-physical (articulatory phonetics) through intra-and intercultural communication (social codes, paraphrase, translation, rhetoric, poetics) to the transcendental (the creation of meaning and the origins of reality).

Please note: This outline is accurate at the time of publication. Minor amendments may be made prior to the start of the academic year.
