Our approach to Prevent

We have adopted a proportionate and risk based approach to the Prevent Duty which covers welfare, events, training and partnerships.

Welfare

Any concerns about a student, whatever their nature, go through the Student of Concern process.  This process removes the pressure on a member of staff to try to work out whether their concern is Prevent related or perhaps connected to other vulnerabilities. It also enables staff to provide the right kind of support to students.

Event Management

The Prevent Lead works closely with colleagues in Room Bookings and Students’ Union UCL to mitigate risk around events and ensure that wherever possible events with external speakers go ahead.

The Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech, Procedure for Managing Events with External Speakers and Code of Conduct for Visitors are key documents for event management at UCL. The Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill, if passed, will make legislative changes in relation to freedom of speech and academic freedom in higher education institutions and in students' unions and if passed, UCL will review the codes and procedures mentioned above and update these pages.

Training

All staff at UCL (including honorary staff and PhD students) are required to complete the mandatory Prevent E-learning course. This ensures all staff at UCL have an awareness of the Prevent Duty and receive guidance to help support vulnerable students.

In addition, the SRS Compliance team delivers annual, in-depth training sessions for all staff who have regular contact with students at UCL. UCL operates a train the trainer approach to ensure knowledge can be embedded across UCL. If you would like more information or are interested in joining an in-depth training session, please contact the SRS compliance team

Collaboration and Partnership

The UCL Prevent Network meets twice a year to review and agree upon the UCL response to the Duty. It comprises of a wide range of colleagues from across UCL. The Prevent Network monitors risk across all areas of the Prevent Duty through the completion of a risk assessment and action plan which are reviewed on a bi-annual basis. Colleagues from across UCL are involved with the completion of the assessment and action plan and these are approved by the UCL Prevent Network.
