About this course

A study of the process of democratization under Gorbachev and El’tsin and the moves towards authoritarianism under Putin. Topics include the role of parties, the conduct of elections, executive legislature relations, the rise of the  ‘oligarchs,’ the role of the security services, Russian and minority nationalism, the Chechen Wars, federalism and regional politics.
