UCL is recognised as having one of the leading departments of
Political Science, not just in the UK, but globally. Politics has been regularly rated in the top 10 of both The Times and The Guardian newspapers Good University Guides. It offers a
uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of
politics, including International Relations, Political Theory and
Public Policy-Making and Administration.
The Department of Political Science offers an affiliate programme in
Political Science and International Relations for undergraduate students from North America and
Japan as well as a number of other countries.
The affiliate programme in Political Science and International Relations draws on a wide
range of courses from across UCL. There are particular strengths in
British Politics, International Relations, West and East European Politics including the EU, Political Anthropology, Political Geography, Political Philosophy and History. Affiliate students remain registered as degree students of
their home institutions but apply to follow the programme of study for
one term or one full year. Through the Department of Political Science,
students will have access to a wide range of weekly seminars, featuring
distinguished external speakers as well as regular high profile events
for policy makers and others.
Students are able to choose from a list of core courses offered by the Department of Political Science (see below) as well as a range of suggested courses in political studies from other UCL departments including European Social and Political Studies (ESPS), Scandinavian Studies, The School of Slavonic and East European Studies, the History Department, etc.
Students must concentrate at least 50% of their courseload within the Department of Political Science. The remaining 50% may be taken outside of the Department of Political Science according to individual student interests.
The Political Science and International Relations programme includes a range of suggested courses in addition to the core courses listed here and students who are admitted will be sent the full list in advance of their arrival. For a full course description, students are referred to the entries for the individual teaching departments.
Fall-term only students cannot be assessed by the end of year examinations, but should check with each relevant individual department to make sure that alternative assessment is possible.
