Introduction
I joined the UCL Faculty of Laws in September 2009 as a PhD student and at SPP I am a teaching assistant for the MA course in ‘International Law and Human Rights’. My doctoral research is about the significance and impact of the legal principle of self-determination in the context of post-conflict state-building. The project aims to identify and map out how the principle of self-determination is used to orchestrate post-war reconstruction processes through an analysis of United Nations Security Council and other regional organizations’ practice. In particular, the discussion will draw from the transitions in Afghanistan (2001 to 2005), Iraq (2003 to 2005) and Somalia (2004 to present). The research is funded by a UCL Faculty of Laws Research Scholarship and supervised by Dr. Başak Çali (UCL School of Public Policy) and Dr. Antonios Tzanakopoulos (UCL Laws).
For the Fall Semester 2011-12 I am a Visiting Researcher at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law. Before undertaking doctoral research I spent a wonderful summer in Egypt studying Arabic and I interned with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner in Geneva; Amnesty International in London and the United Nations University in Tokyo. I hold a degree in Philosophy from the Università di Bologna, an MA in Human Rights from UCL and an LLM in International Law and International Relations from Lancaster University.
