Assessment
One 2,000-3,000 word essay to be submitted on Tuesday 3 May 2011 + one 3-hour exam to be taken in the Summer 2011 term
Description
This course is obligatory for all first-year single and combined honours students, except for students taking Language and Culture and ESPS.
Brief syllabus
This course offers an introduction to the field of Hispanic and Latin American studies based on the in-depth study of four texts/themes, as follows:
A. Benito Perez Galdos, Marianela
B. The social function of "santeria" in Cuba
C. Federico Garcia Lorca, Bodas de sangre
D. Ernesto Sabato, El tunel
Course Objectives
To introduce students to close analysis of literary and social texts from Spain and Latin America. In addition, the course aims to provide a critical basis from which students can develop adequate essay-writing techniques.
