This lecture inaugurates the annual Alcalá Galiano Lecture Series in the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies, SELCS, UCL, designed to commemorate the first Professorship in Spanish to be established in the United Kingdom, held by Antonio Alcalá Galiano at University College London in 1828
