What is social media?

'Social media' is a term that now refers to methods of allowing any users to publish content online. This can include:

  • writing blogs
  • adding comments to others' blogs
  • publishing videos, audio or images on to the Web
  • posting content onto a forum or social network site
  • collaborating on an online project (e.g. a Wikipedia article)

This sharing of information, and interacting with other users, can help:

  • information to be shared with interested individuals who may not be within reach
  • create online communities of collaboration and trust

Well-known social media tools include Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Delicious, and many, many more. UCL also has its own blogging service, which UCL departments can take advantage of.

This website has been set up to help guide UCL staff as to how best to use social media. Due to the ever-changing nature of social media, we expect it will grow over time - therefore, if you have any comments or suggestions, please do email us at digital-comms [at] ucl.ac.uk
