Research Description

As Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference, Research and Training in Travel Medicine, I am actively involved in travel medicine related research.

My current research activities involve collaborative research through an FP6 EU framework programme to determine the impact of basic cabin environment parameters upon fitness to travel; the evaluation of new vaccines, vaccines which circumvent non-response to hepatitis B vaccines; anti-viral agents and other forms of prophylaxis against infectious diseases

The FP6 EU research grant addresses the concern about the low-pressure cabin environment in commercial passenger aircraft affecting significantly the health and well-being of passengers and crew and involves a research collaboration together with the Building Research Establishment, the Department of Health, Department of the Environment and Transport within a Consortium of 18 partners (national, international, and SME organisations from 8 EU countries). The research project will study the medical and physiological effects on passengers and crew related to cabin pressure at levels above and below the current standard (including rates of ascent and descent) together with other synergistic effects that may exacerbate any related problems. The project comprises 5 work packages which will include in-flight monitoring of passengers and crew, crew work load determination and modelling hypobaric chamber 'flights', together with other synergistic effects related to cabin air quality linking to the Framework Programme 5 Cabin Air project. A main objective of this research project is to determine and provide recommendations on the health needs of those who travel by air.

I have been actively involved in clinical trial research since 1990. I have been directly involved in more than 100 clinical trials including Phase I through to Phase IV clinical trials, including the successful completion of an FDA audit. I was the founder and Medical Director of The Royal Free Clinical Trials Centre at the Royal Free & University College Medical School which I established in 1995. I have enabled a significant number of clinical trials and associated research projects to be undertaken in close collaboration with colleagues both within the NHS as well as in academia. Recent research studies include vaccine clinical trials both general and travel-related, including those of hepatitis A and B, yellow fever, influenza, meningococcal meningitis; the investigation of the mechanisms involved in non-response to hepatitis B vaccines, clinical trials of malaria chemoprophylaxis amongst others.

Education Description

As Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference, Research and Training in Travel Medicine, I am actively involved in setting standards and training in the discipline of travel medicine.

I am actively involved in developing postgraduate education within the speciality of travel medicine including being the Programme Director of a distance-learning MSC Course in Travel Health and Medicine at UCL. I also organise an annual Introductory Short Course in Travel Medicine which attracts 30 postgraduate students per annum as well as an Annual Study Day in Travel Medicine which attracts 150 health practitioners per annum.

I established a peer-reviewed journal in Travel Medicine with Elsevier Science in 2003, The Journal of Travel Medicine & Infectious Disease of which I am the Editor-in-Chief. A recent development includes a section dedicated to publishing student research to encourage students to undertake research projects in travel medicine and infectious disease.

I am also the Academic Lead and Sub-Dean for Electives for UCL students and for visiting internatinoal elective students, University College London Medical School. In this capacity, I have been actively involved in developing these medical education activities.
