Profile

Research Description

I am co-director of the British Regional Heart Study a large prospective study of cardiovascular disease involving 7735 men screened in 1978-1980 and followed up for all cause mortality and cardiovascular morbidity. These men were rexamined 20 years later. My main research interest is in cardiovascular epidemiology (coronary heart disease, sudden cardiac death, stroke and diabetes) with particular focus on the role of lifestyle factors (alcohol, smoking, obesity, physical activity) and modifiable risk factors as predictors of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and disability. With the ageing cohort, our research focuses now on studying cardiovascular prevention in older adults. Current research includes studying the role of lifetyle factors, obesity and obesity related biomarkers including adipokines, body composition, the metabolic syndrome, inflammatory and haemostatic factors in CVD and diabetes in older men. We are also currently developing models that best identify older men and women at high risk of diabetes.
