Research Description

The Centre for Ageing Population Studies (CAPS) in UCL’s depart of Primary Care & Population Health is the only research unit for clinical and social gerontology based in primary care. It adopts a biopsychosocial perspective on research, and draws research funding from the European Commission, ESRC, MRC, Department of Health, industry, charities, and the National Institute for Health Research. Current and recent studies include:
One of the first wave  5 year NIHR programme grants, on dementia care in the community, won in competition against powerful specialist research groups in 2007.
A mixed methodology study of factors determining uptake of preventive eye care in older people.
The ProAge trial of health promotion for older people using a decision support system, funded by the European Commission. The experience gained in this RCT  led to the Smarter Working in Health & Social Care (SWISH) project, developing a “Life Check” approach to health and social wellbeing in later life, and funded by the Department of Health. This has been followed by the MRC-funded Well-being in Health & Social care(WISH), combining the medical domains from ProAge with the social domains developed in SWISH.
The National evaluation of the National Service Framework for Older People at its mid-point in 2006.
The identification of factors promoting active aging (including psychological well-being and quality of life) dynamically among older people in the community.
The largest multicentre trial of exercise promotion for older people in general practice, which began in 2008, which has informed two further studies of exercise promotion in general practice, PACE-Lift and PACE-Up, and another UCL study on determinants of habitual exercise
A trial of case-management of people with dementia in primary care.
A five nation  intervention development project on palliative care for people with cancer and dementia, funded by the European Commission.
CAPS is community-oriented,  multidisciplinary in attitude, and actively mixed in its methodological approaches. It has established close working relationships with academic research teams from nursing, social work, economic and old age psychiatry in the UK, and is a leading partner in the European research group on psychosocial interventions in dementia, INTERDEM.
