Research Description

Carol’s research addresses early life influences on child health and the effectiveness of screening and other clinical and public health strategies to improve the health of children, based on prospective large scale population and patient cohort studies. She has led multicentre and multidisciplinary research initiatives to enhance the biomedical information collected in large scale population based studies such as the UK Millennium Cohort Study. These include objective measurements of body size and composition, physical activity, as well as exposure to infections and environmental pollutants, throughout early childhood, and the enhancement of this information through linkage to electronic health and other records. She was recently appointed as scientific leader of a new interdisciplinary UK study which will chart the early lives of more than 100,000 babies and their parents across the UK as a joint strategic research initiative of the ESRC and the MRC.

Carol has an international reputation for her work to evaluate the prevention effectiveness of newborn screening programmes for inherited or congenital disorders with life threatening or life limiting outcomes in later life. She was the principal investigator of a UK-wide collaborative study to evaluate newborn screening for a rare metabolic disorder associated with sudden infant death, which led to its implementation across the UK.  Her current research includes studies to examine the relation of newborn hip development to hip dysplasia in adult life.

Carol was a member of MRC Strategy Board (2007-11), the OSCHR Electronic  Health Records Research Board (2007-10), MRC Council (2004-7) and the Wellcome Trust Populations and Public Health funding committee (2004-7). She chaired the MRC Training and Careers Group (2007-11) and the MRC Training and Careers Development Board (2004-7). She is currently a member of the British Paediatric  Surveillance Unit Executive Committee (2002-), the MRC Ethics Regulation and Public Involvement Committee (2004-) and the Economic and Social Research Council [ESRC] Scientific Advisory Committee for the  Birth Cohort Studies (2005-). She represents the Academy of Medical Sciences on the National Information Governance Board (NIGB) and the NIGB Ethics and Confidentiality Committee (2008-). She served on the Academy of Medical Sciences Working Group, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, which reviewed the regulation and governance of UK health research involving human participants, their tissue or their data (2011).
