Research Description

I am laboratory lead for the Prenatal Gene and Cellular Therapy Group at the Institute for Women's Health. The aim of the research is to develop prenatal treatment of severe and life-threatening disorders using gene and cellular therapy, and to investigate the efficacy, safety and ethical issues of such treatment. Developments: new ultrasound guided injection techniques to deliver gene therapy vectors to fetal organs; long term expression of therapeutic genes for treatment of haemophilia; long term increase in uteroplacental blood flow for treatment of fetal growth restriction; stem cell gene therapy to treat congenital disease. My clinical based research is studying prediction and prevention of preterm birth.

Education Description

I teach both undergraduate and postgraduate clinicians and scientists, at UCL and other institutions.
I lecture to 4th year UCL medical students and intercalating medical students (UCL Surgical Sciences). I also host projects for UCL intercalating medical students and BSc students, Special Study Modules for final year medical students from UCL and other medical schools, and medical student elective projects. I lecture on UCL MSc courses including Institute of Child Health MSc in Cell and Gene Therapy, in Surgical Science, and the global e-MSc course in Haemoglobinopathies, developed by UCL and Thalassaemia International Federation. I am one of the course organisers, an examiner and a lecturer for the UCL Institute for Women’s Health MSc courses in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine, and Reproductive Sciences and Women's Health.
I am a tutor for the UCL British Heart Foundation 4 year PhD Studentship in Cardiovascular Biomedicine, and the UCL Doctoral Training Programme in Medical and Biomedical Imaging a joint PhD programme between UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) and Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI). I am an accredited Educational Supervisor within the London Deanery.
