Profile

Research Description

My research is focused on the development and application of MRI to understand the mechanisms of damage and repair in the Central Nervous System. In particular, I have contributed to the development and applications of new MRI techniques, such as brain tractography, providing insights into the structural damage in multiple sclerosis and motor neuron disease. I have also applied brain functional MRI to patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis to evaluate how patterns of recovery change with accumulation of disability and progression. I have recently contributed to the development of new techniques for the study of the spinal cord, such as spectroscopy and tractography, and studied patients with multiple sclerosis who presented with a cervical cord relapse to assess whether new MRI measures predict clinical recovery. My long-term plan is to develop a research programme to identify appropriate treatments that protect the brain from the accumulation of damage and promote recovery in multiple sclerosis.

I am involved in the supervision of PhD students, visiting fellows and MSc students.

I have published in a number of journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Brain, Cerebral Cortex, Neurology, Neuroimage and Human Brain Mapping. I work as referee on several scientific journals and regularly review grants applications.

In about 2003, I started to collaborate with highly regarded researchers at the Functional MRI Centre of the Brain, University of Oxford. In particular, I have contributed to software tools which are freely available through the fMRIB Software library, such as Tract-Based Spatial Statistics. I also work in collaboration with the UCL Department of Computer Science, and the Imaging Science Dept. at the University of Manchester.

I present my work at national and international conferences and workshops, and have won awards worldwide, including the Young Investigator Award, from the Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis.
I have experience with engaging the public in my MS-related work. I have recently worked with the Wellcome Trust to increase public awareness and understanding of research in MS, in particular by participation in a short film entitled: "What Can Science Do For Me?" produced by the Media Trust. This short film has been broadcasted on the Community Channel (with repeats) and is available in the Wellcome Trust library. I helped to set up and now regularly update the on-line research database of the MS International Federation. I help to coordinate the MS Research News, which consists in selecting and summarising in a lay format recently published scientific papers.

Research Activities

The development and application of structural and functional MRI techniques to patients with Multiple Sclerosis to understand the mechanisms underlying neurological disability and recovery.

Education Description

I assist on a daily basis with all aspects of the research of PhD students and visiting fellows who I supervise, including advice on the recruitment and follow-up of patients, theoretical and technical support with the neuro-imaging and statistical analysis software (SPM, FSL, TBSS, Stata, SPSS), interpretation of the results, writing up papers and theses, and discussion of recent advances in neuro-imaging and multiple sclerosis research. My supervisory role in respect to MSc students is similar.
I am actively involved in running the MRI Unit Journal Club, in which postgraduate students present and discuss recently published papers.

I have given numerous lectures at the Institute of Neurology for postgraduate (PhD, MSc and Diploma) students. In 2006, I have lectured at the ISMRM on the Clinical DTI/PWI/fMRI course of the educational programme. I scored 1.95 on speaking effectiveness (which is above the mean scores of all speakers of 1.78) and 1.83 on content (which is above the mean scores of all speakers of 1.78). The scale went from 1=excellent to 5=poor. From the autumn of 2008, I am going to give two lectures to the MSc students enrolled on the MSc in Advanced Neuroimaging entitled: (i) Contribution of DTI in understanding the disease mechanisms of MS; (ii) Clinical features of MS.

I am also involved in teaching Diploma and MSc students at the Institute of Neurology by performing clinical demonstrations, which consist in presenting and discussing clinical cases.
