Profile

Research Description

My main interests are in the clinical and social needs and the treatment outcomes of the severely mentally ill, including people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Much of my work has involved evaluation of mental health service models for these groups. Recently I have been involved in several investigations in the area of acute care, including evaluations of crisis resolution teams and alternative models of inpatient service delivery. I am also ledthe SDO funded National Inpatient Staff Morale Study and the Mental Health Research Network's national acute care research group. My clinical work is as consultant psychiatrist in the Camden and Islington Early Intervention Service for psychosis, and early intervention services are also a major research interest in which I am currently conducting studies.

Two major studies that I am currently leading are the CORE study, an NIHR programme grant aimed at optimising the care delivered by crisis resolution teams, and the CIRCLE study, a multicentre trial funded by the NIHR HTA programme to investigate the effectiveness of a contingency management intervention for cannabis use in first episode psychosis.

Education Description

My main current educational role is as course director for two new MScs in the Division of Psychiatry, the MSc in Mental Health Sciences Research, aimed at aspiring clinical academics and researchers in the field of mental health, and the MSc in Clinical Mental Health Sciences, providing a broad range of options for in-depth post-graduate study of mental health practice and its underlying evidence base. We very much look forward to welcoming our first intakes of students on these courses in September 2014.

For the past ten years I have been director of the MSc in Psychiatric Research, a two year part-time masters that has aimed to provide a high quality training in research methods relevant to mental health research for trainee psychiatrists. This is replaced this year by the broader MSc in Mental Health Sciences Research.
