Research Description

Investigating the interface between material science and cell biology.
Engineering functional materials to activate specific cellular responses (e.g. the hypoxia pathway) for tissue regeneration. Exploring cellular response to various physicochemical stimuli e.g. surface chemistry, micro and nano-topography, mechanical stress, inorganic ions and physical architecture.

Development of non-invasive Bio-Raman spectroscopy for live biochemical analysis of cells, tissues and tissue engineered constructs. Developing novel strategies for promoting the vascularisation of tissue engineered scaffolds. Other interests include; the in-situ endothelialisation of vascular grafts, bone-implant interface biology, stem cell differentiation, cellular interaction with carbon nanotubes, the biological consequences of orthopaedic wears debris and lymphangiogeneis in regenerative medicine.

Education Description

Lecturing:
Programme Director for MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine (UCL)
Module tutor for; Nanotechnology, Tissue Engineering, Practical Cell Biology, Biomaterials and Research Methodologies.
Lecturer on the Intercalated BSc in Medicine and MSc in Surgical Science (UCL).
Lectured for four years within the Dept. Materials ICL (24/24 teaching assessment) on undergraduate and post-graduate courses including: Material Science and Engineering B.Eng, Biomedical Engineering M/Sc, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering M.Eng.

Course organisation:
General administration for MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine including; student recruitment, setting exams/marking exams, coursework and developing course structure.
