Research Description

To create commercially accessible materials that activates specific cellular responses (e.g. the cellular hypoxia pathway) for tissue regeneration and tissue engineering. This involves investigating material-biological interactions by exploring cellular (stem cells and primary cell) responses to various physicochemical stimuli e.g. surface chemistry, micro and nano-topography, mechanical stress, inorganic ions and physical tissue scaffold architecture. Current projects include osteo-chondral tissue engineering, HIF mimicking scaffolds for wound healing and mechanisms of increasing cell survival in adverse conditions. 

Other interests include: the development of novel strategies for promoting the vascularisation of tissue engineered scaffolds; the development of non-invasive Bio-Raman spectroscopy for live biochemical analysis of cells and tissue engineered constructs; bone-implant interface biology, stem cell differentiation, cellular interaction with carbon nanotubes, the biological consequences of orthopaedic wears debris and lymphangiogeneis in regenerative medicine.

Education Description

I’m the Programme Director/ course tutor for the  MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine (UCL) on which I lecture, designed modules and currently run the Tissue Engineering module. I lecture and run workshops on a wide range of regenerative medicine related topics including; cell-material interactions, nanotechnology in tissue engineering, bone and cartilage tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, hypoxia and stem cells. I also lecture on the role of nanotechnology in medicine (including nanotoxicity) and more generic lectures on experimental planning and critical analysis of research papers.

Other teaching activities: Post Graduate (taught) Tutor for the Division of Surgery; Royal Free Division of Surgery Education Lead, Divisional Post-Graduate Teaching Assistant Coordinator onwhich I run a “Developing Learning and Teaching in Higher Education” course for PGs who teach. 

I’m also passionate about increasing awareness and participation in science and I’m proud to have been involved in a number of schemes which encourage this including; the  In2scienceUK placement scheme (2013-current), Next Generation Project  (ICL 2007-2009), Nuffield Science bursaries,  International Scientific Youth Forum, STEMNET andUCL Masterclass, Outreach.
