The Certificate and short courses in Electronic communication and publishing

The Certificate in Electronic communication and publishing is designed for those who wish to gain some basic knowledge of these subjects, but is not a full professional qualification. Certificate students take four modules which may be chosen from any of the core and optional courses

Any module from the taught programmes offered by SLAIS can be taken as a short course, by arrangement with the tutor concerned.

What are the admission requirements?

Normal requirements for admission to the certificate are a first or second class honours degree or relevant work experience. There are no formal requirements for admission to a short course, although education to the equivalent of GCE A Level or first degree standard is generally expected.

How much time commitment is required?

The Certificate programme can be completed in a half year of full-time study; in one year, attending one day, or two half days per week; or in two years, attending half a day per week. An individual module taken as a short course would require attendance for half a day per week for one term.

Classes are held in the morning (10:00-1:00) or afternoon (2:00-5:00). In addition, time should be allowed for private study and for completion of coursework.

Do students on short courses take an assessment and obtain a qualification?

Short course students may choose whether or not they wish to take a formal assessment in the module. Assessment normally takes the form of one or more pieces of written coursework. Short course students do not obtain a recognised qualification from UCL, but can be issued with a certificate of attendance as evidence that they have studied the module(s) of their choice.

Students who have taken a short course and passed the assessment for the module can count their short course as credit towards a formal qualification from UCL if they are subsequently offered a part-time or full-time place and proceed to the Certificate, Diploma or MA within an agreed time limit.

How much does it cost?

Details of fees can be found on the UCL Registry website. The fee for the Certificate is one-third of the fee for the Masters degree. For UK and EU residents, the fee for a single-module short course is £550, payable at the start of the module. If your normal place of residence is outside the EU, the fee is £850.
