Two webcams were installed in Silicon Fen, one rural and one in a hi-tech business park.
The rural location is Sutton Gault in Cambridgeshire (right) where a camera was placed on the roof of the Anchor Inn, a 17th Century coaching inn in May 2004.

This image (right) is no longer live. The webcam harvested images pixel by pixel over the course of a year until 14th May 2005.
Each image was collected from top to bottom and left to right in horizontal bands continuously, encoding the landscape over time, recording fluctuations in light and movement throughout the day (and night). In 12 months over 4,000 images have been archived from Sutton Gault.

The work explores the relationship between landscape, time and technological innovation in East Anglia’s ‘Silicon Fen’, where technology is literally embedded in the flat horizons of a reclaimed landscape of canals, sluices, dykes and ditches.

A selection of these images are displayed in the archive section of this website, which is also being updated with images from the other Fenlandia locations.

A solo show featuring digital prints from the Sutton Gault Fenlandia archive and a live camera feed from Ely, Cambridgeshire was at Babylon Gallery, Ely from 23 September until 5th November 2006 [more...]

The technological location for Silicon Fen was Cambourne Business Park, Cambridgeshire who kindly agreed to lend their existing web surveillance camera for this project. The camera was active intermittently from January 2005 until January 2006. A selection of images from Cambourne Business Park is available in the Fenlandia archive.
