Found Footage: Whitechapel

14 October – 20 November 2011

‘Found Footage: Whitechapel’ is a solo show at the Idea Store Whitechapel project space and the latest in a series of animated works constructed entirely from still digital photographs, which play on the relationship between the still and moving image. The others in the series include ‘Love Brid’ (2009), a short film commissioned by Animate Projects, and ‘Found Footage: Bangkok’ for an exhibition at BU Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (2010).
For ‘Found Footage: Whitechapel’, Susan Collins photographed over 10,000 images around Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Stepney over a few days in July 2011.
The title refers to the ‘found’ subjects which Collins came across, framed and captured with her camera.

Opening Times: Mon – Thurs 9am – 9pm, Fri 9am – 6pm, Sat 9am – 5pm, Sun 11am – 5pm

The works in the series can be seen as portraits of particular places, celebrating their character and energy. Collins immerses herself in each location, collecting myriad images which are then edited into a tribute to her subject. The diversity and vibrancy of the areas in and around Whitechapel provide rich source material for the latest installment in the series.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Film and Video Umbrella with additional equipment kindly lent by Whitechapel Gallery.
