The Material Research Project based in the Methods and Materials Room of the graduate painting area, spearheads the role of materials within the creative process.

In pedagogic terms, the conceptual and emotional content of a student’s work is explored in relation to the process of its making and its material form. The Methods and Materials Room is a permanent site where students and staff experiment with materials extending their research by shared discovery, discussion and display. It houses a growing materials library containing a very generous donation of pigment specimens from the Winsor & Newton’s Archives and paper samples from John Purcell Papers.
