Kate Bancroft

I draw people from memory, unencumbered by any static reference to create non-narrative portraits. I paint these humble drawings as a meditative labour of respect, to elevate their status and include them in the history of portrait painting. This approach is a reaction to my place in a generation overwhelmed by constantly evolving technology, where the delicate nature of human memory is easily outshined by the sharpness of digital memories. These paintings are contemporary exercises intended to capture the contingency and fragility of human memory and show how the reality of the past has been flavoured by time with my fantasies and altered by other visual influences.
