Playing with Engines

Simon Schofield and Andre Ktori of AudioROM, and Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead
This presentation features two projects in which creative websites are explored through programmes that enable the user to become a player.

In AudioROM's www site and theUrbanAria project Simon Schofield and Andre Ktori are constructing a web environment that is primarily navigated acoustically. Sound engines enable the user to manipulate sounds, to create music, and to sample, while moving through the site. The library of sounds available through the sound engines may in turn be evocative of a city or another spacial environment.

Trigger Happy, by Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead uses the interface of the classic Space Invaders game. The invading forces to be used or shot are hyper links to other pre-existing websites. The game make the users 'play' with the typical rapid-fire behaviour of web-surfing.
