UCLIC

UCLIC is a leading UK Centre of Excellence in Human-Computer Interaction teaching and research.

We study interactions between people and technology, drawing on the best scientific traditions in Computer Science and Human Sciences, and working collaboratively with the research community and industry

  • Congratulations to several UCLIC students who have got their work accepted at CHI 2012! Amir Kamsin has had a paper accepted to the CHI 2012 Student Research competition; Sandy Gould led the proposal for 'Multitasking and Interruptions: A SIG on bridging the gap between research on the micro and macro worlds ' that has been accepted; Sarah Wiseman has had her work in progress on 'Designing for the task: What numbers are really used in hospitals?' and also a workshop paper on 'A case for Number Entry' accepted; Chris Janssen has had his work in progress on 'Adaptive Multitasking: How Adaptive are Individuals Really?' accepted; Tali Swann-Sternberg and Aneesha Singh have had their work in progress in technology for chronic pain management accepted; two groups of our MSc students have been accepted on to the CHI Student Design competiton and Lucy Hughes has had her work on the Digital Sensoria project accepted at AltCHI 2012!
  • Yvonne Rogers is also organising a workshop with R. Comber, E. Ganglbauer, J Choi, J. Honhout, K. O'Hara and J. Maitland on 'Food and Interaction design: Designing for Food in Everyday Life' at CHI 2012 and has a paper with Paul Marshall and John Bird and Sidhart Shah that has been accepted to their Ar-CHI-tecture workshop on 'Mind your Step: Exploiting the Potential of Interactive Floor Displays'.
  • Nadia Berthouze will be giving a TED talk in Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design on 26 March 2011 - more details to follow...
  • Congratulations to Yvonne Rogers, who has been elected to the CHI Academy! She also has 4 papers that will be presented at CHI 2012 with Rose Johnson and Nadia Berthouze as well as other collaborators from the Open University. These are Best Intentions: Health Monitoring Technology and Children by T Toscos, K Connelly and Y Rogers, Mechanisms for Collaboration: A Design and Evaluation Framework for Multi-User Interfaces by N Yuill and Y Rogers and Being in the thick of in-the-wild studies: the challenges and insights or researcher participation by R Johnson, Y Rogers, J van der Linden and N Bianchi-Berthouze, and From Participatory to Contributory Simulations: Changing the Game in the Classroom by S Kreitmayer, Y Rogers, R Laney and S Peake.
  • Congratulations also to Anna Cox, who has 2 papers to be presented at CHI 2012 with Jonathan Back and Duncan Brumby. These are Not Doing but Thinking: The Role of Challenge in Immersive Videogames by A.L Cox, P.A Cairns, P Shah and M Carroll and Choosing to Interleave: Human Error and Information Access Cost by J Back, A.L Cox and D Brumby.

DEADLINES FOR PHD APPLICATIONS

Because UCLIC is an interfaculty centre, some of our research students are registered in Computer Science and some through Psychology and Language Sciences. For applicants wishing to be considered for UCL scholarships (expected start: September 2012) the closing dates for applications are:

Tuesday 31st January 2012 - via Psychology and Life Sciences
Friday 6th January 2012 - via Computer Science

Use the menu on your left to find out more about UCLIC, our research, the people at UCLIC and our masters program in Human-Computer Interaction.

To demonstrate just how important it is to try and improve our interactions with technology, see *Why buttons go bad*... This was the winning entry by some of our students in an internal 'Digital Stories competition' as part of our MSc course in Human Computer Interaction with Ergonomics.

MSc Course Open Evening

We will be having an Open Evening in May for prospective students interested in our MSc course in Human-Computer Interaction with Ergonomics - this will be from 5pm on 2 May 2012 and it's a great opportunity to meet lecturers and current students! You can also find out about research in the HCI field, computer games research and many other research activities at UCLIC and try out some of our sensing devices (e.g., eye‐tracking, motion capture systems, biosensors). To attend the UCLIC Open Evening please fill out the registration form by 23 April 2012. Anyone who has already applied will automatically be invited to attend.

'The next video illustrates the confusion caused by 'chaos buttons' as users attempt to 'race' different models of microwave. The winner will likely be a mix of the racer's ability to ride the microwave, the microwave's ease of use, the task and the context. Who will win?? You decide!!

This video tied for third place in a recent HFES YouTube video contest about communicating Human Factors research to the general public - well done Dom, Chris and Maartje! Dom has also just received the 'Golden mouse award' for this video at the CHI video showcase for 'best thought piece'!

WARNING: Microwaving whilst empty can cause damage. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions. Always race responsibly.

UCLIC is jointly supported by the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences and the UCL Department of Computer Science.

We now have Hyperwords integrated on our site, which makes it possible to perform a variety of searches on a word or phrase - simply select the text you're interested in and click on the icon to choose a command from the drop-down list.
