Professor David Coen (Department of Political Science)

Prior to joining UCL David Coen held appointments at the London Business School and Max Planck Institute and wrote his PhD at the European University Institute in Florence. In 2008/2009 he held the Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts in 2009 and is currently a member of the board of the European Centre for Public Affairs and the Ethics Committee of the European Public Affairs Committee. His recent book “Lobbying the EU” was published by OUP in 2009, and he edited the “Handbook of Business and Government” for OUP in 2010. 

Business Lobbying in the EU

The role of the firm in European public policy has been a long-standing contentious issue for academics and policymakers. Moving beyond the Euro corporatists, this lecture will develop an analysis of individual business lobbying capacities that takes account of the distinct nature of EU public policy process. The talk will address the political behavioural logic of business, assess the allocation of political resources across the European institutions and along the policy cycle, and explore the effectiveness of such strategies.
