‘Hinduism, Christianity, and Religious Liberal Toleration’

Many liberals argue that illiberal religions pose a particular challenge to the liberal state that must be combatted.  While illiberal religions are not to be outlawed, they argue that these should be excluded from college campuses, refused accommodations in schools and, when the occasion arises, should be scolded by the state.  I will argue that this view, which I call liberal imperialism, is insufficiently attentive to the demands of liberal toleration and liberal pluralism.

Professor Christopher Kirkey (State University of New York, Plattsburgh) - The immediate results of the April 7, 2014 election in Quebec are clear. The Liberal party, under the leadership of Philippe Couillard, emerged victorious capturing a clear parliamentary majority - 70 of the 125 seats in the Quebec National Assembly. The governing Parti Québécois, led by Premier Pauline Marois, was resoundingly defeated, capturing only 30 seats (down from a pre-election total of 54). The Coalition Avenir Québec emerged in third place with 22 seats.

Dr Tony McCulloch, UCL Institute of the Americas, and Dr Chris Kirkey, State University of New York (Plattsburgh), are delighted to present the July 2014 London Colloquium in collaboration with the British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS). The Colloquium will take place on Friday 11 July and Saturday 12 July and will feature more than twenty young scholars from all over Europe. A selection of the best papers delivered at the Colloquium will be published in a special issue of the British Journal of Canadian Studies, co-edited by Tony McCulloch and Chris Kirkey, to be published in September 2015.
