Richard Gilson graduated from Cambridge University and Kings College Hospital Medical School before training in general medicine in London and Birmingham. He undertook specialist training in genitourinary medicine and HIV at the Middlesex Hospital before moving to the Academic Department of Genitourinary Medicine at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School (subsequently the UCL Centre for Sexual Health & HIV Research) completing an MD thesis on interactions between HIV and hepatitis B virus infection. He now heads the Clinical Research Group at the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV Research, is an honorary consultant at the Mortimer Market Centre and University College London Hospitals, and is Research and Development Lead for Camden Primary Care Trust. He is scientific secretary of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV specialist interest group for HPV, and on the hepatitis guidelines committee for the British HIV Association.
