BA French and Asian or African Language (Non Near or Middle Eastern Language)


Students take 4.0 cu each year. Below are the requirements for the French side of your degree. Please consult your Department at SOAS for the SOAS side of your degree.

First year
Compulsory modules (1.5cu)

FREN1001 Use of French (0.5cu)
FREN1002 French Oral (0.5cu)
FREN1102 Reading French Texts (0.5cu)

Francophone students take a FREN1*** module (0.5 cu) instead of FREN1002

Optional modules (0.5cu)
FREN1101 The Making of Modern France (0.5cu)
or
One ELCS6*** intermediate-level module (0.5cu)

*Students must choose one 0.5cu intermediate-level ELCS module either in year 1 or in year 2.

Second year
Compulsory modules (1.0cu)

FREN2001 Use of French (0.5cu)
FREN2002 French Oral (0.5cu)

Francophone students take a FREN2*** module (0.5 cu) instead of FREN2002

Optional modules (1.0cu)
A total of 1.0cu from FREN2*** modules
Or, if students did not take an ELCS6*** module in year 1:
One 0.5cu FREN2*** module and one 0.5cu ELCS6*** module

*Students must choose one 0.5cu intermediate-level ELCS module either in year 1 or in year 2.

Third year
SELCS Year Abroad module (0.5cu)
AHSA3001 or AHSA3002 (0.5cu)
AHSA3003 or AHSA3004 (0.5cu)
AHSA3006 or AHSA3007 (0.5cu)
French and an Asian or African Language students should also register for FREN3907 (2.0cu)

Final year

FREN4002 French Oral (0.5cu)

Francophone students can choose to take FREN4003 French Essay (0.5cu) or FREN4004 Advanced Translation (0.5cu) instead of FREN4002.
