How to pass the Year Abroad
You need to do four things:
1. Complete the university or work placement(s) you are undertaking
In practice, this means successfully engaging with 23-30 ECTS (or equivalent) of study for each term of your YA , or completing your work placement to the satisfaction of your employer.
How do you prove that you have done so?
- University placement students must, for each term, upload to the SELCS YA Moodle site copies of their Learning Agreement and of their exam marks certificate.
- Work placement students must, at the end of each term, upload to the SELCS YA Moodle site a copy of a questionnaire, completed by their employer or a senior colleague attesting to the student’s satisfactory fulfilment of their obligations.
These forms constitute the necessary documentation for the mandatory modules ELCS3001 Year Abroad Assessment A (first semester, 1.5 cu) and ELCS3002 Year Abroad Assessment B (second semester, 1.5 cu).
Check the SELCS YA Moodle site for submission deadlines.
2. Complete your Third Year Project(s)
A Third Year Project consists of the outline of the presentation you will prepare for your third year language oral examination. It must be written in the target language on a topic agreed with an academic supervisor.
Modern Languages students must upload two outlines of 500 words each, one for each of the languages they are studying, and will sit two 20-minute orals. Single Honours, Language and Culture and Modern Languages Plus students must upload one outline of 1000 words and sit a 30-minute oral You must have uploaded your outilines on the SELCS YA Moodle site by 1st September for your oral examination to take place in Registration Week of your final year. These outlines constitute the necessary documentation for the mandatory modules ELCS3003 Third Year Project A (first semester, 0.5 cu), ELCS3004 Third Year Project B (second semester, 0.5 cu), and ELCS3005 Third Year Project C (both semesters, 1.0 cu).
In order to complete your Third Year Project(s) you should keep in regular contact with your supervisor(s) during the course of the year. Further guidance on this is available on the YA project pages.
Check the SELCS YA Moodle site for submission deadlines.
3. Complete a SELCS Progress Report for each semester
This document encourages you to reflect on your experiences and acts as an important information gathering tool for the YA Team. The form can be found and uploaded on the SELCS YA Moodle site. The reports constitute the mandatory modules ELCS3006 Progress Report A (first semester, 0 cu) and ELCS3007 Progress Report B (second semester, 0 cu).
Check the SELCS YA Moodle site for submission deadlines.
4. Satisfy the Study Abroad Office’s requirements for keeping in touch.
You need to supply the UCL Study Abroad Office with the documentation it requires on time and as instructed. That documentation includes Arrival and Departure forms and the Study Abroad Office Questionnaire.
Check the Study Abroad Office Moodle site for submission deadlines.
