Christian, Muslim and Jewish Themes in the Work of Jorge Luis Borges

This course deals with some of the literary, historical and ethical issues that are found in the work of Borges. The aim of the course is to present an approximation to Borges’s thought via his interest in cultural and religious constructions as well as to enhance the students’ awareness of the literary fertility that this diversity can offer. It will consider a variety of genres, including the essay, poetry, and the short story. The themes and motifs that will be studied are taken from the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultural traditions with which Borges established an interesting dialogue.

This course is taught in Spanish.

Assessment: one 3000 word essay (40%); and one unseen two-hour written examination (60%).
