Old Norse 2
Course code: SCAN4401.
Course unit value: 0.5.
This course forms a logical continuation of Old Norse I (SCAN 7402). Icelandic literature remains the focus of the course: the major set texts include Egils saga and the Eddic poem Voluspá. Students will also be introduced to skaldic verse: we will read Hákonarmál (a Norwegian poem about the deaths of a king in the tenth century), and selected verses by the poet Arnórr jarlaskáld, who served the earls of Orkney.
Assessment: one unseen three-hour written examination (70%); and one 2 500 word essay (30%).
Tutor: Dr Helga Luthersdottir
Preparatory reading and set texts: special reading lists will be provided for the individual texts.
