Advanced Norwegian
Course code: SCAN4003.
Course unit value: 0.5.
Aim: To develop skills in the reading and comprehension of mainly bokmål, but some texts of nynorsk will be used. Writing and speaking of bokmål up to near native proficiency.
Method: Writing resumés and answering questions on contemporary Norwegian texts. Reading two modern Norwegian novels. Working with synonyms. Listening to and watching Norwegian TV-programmes on the Internet
Oral proficiency will be developed via individual presentations and class discussions of topics dealing with contemporary Norwegian issues and other issues of interest to members of the group. Student participation is essential.
Assessment: one unseen three-hour written examination (50%); one oral examination (30%); and coursework (20%).

Preparatory reading and set texts: Mrs Alexandroni will facilitate purchase of will facilitate purchase of books from Norway at the beginning of term.
Textbook
There will be no textbook. Instead, there will be a variety of material used, including newspaper and magazine articles, passages from novels and short stories, previous exam papers and Norwegian films.

Dictionaries
All students must own a good Norwegian-English and English-Norwegian dictionary. One of the dictionaries must indicate the gender of Norwegian nouns.
