The Subaltern in Latin American Culture
Course code: SPAN2307.
Course unit value: 0.5.
This course seeks to analyse the portrayal of the subaltern and the city in Latin American culture in a variety of genres, including the essay, novel, poetry, the short story and film. The figures of the subaltern chosen include the slave in a colonial society, the worker in a capitalist society, and the woman in a patriarchal society.
Assessment: one 3000 word essay (40%); and one unseen two-hour written examination (60%).
