It was during the Viking Age that Iceland was colonized (9th and 10th centuries) and it was in Iceland that a rich and varied literature developed in the twelfth, thirteenth and subsequent centuries. This course seeks to give some taste of that literature. It also aims to develop students’ comprehension skills in the Old Norse language.
Assessment: one unseen three-hour written examination (70%); and one 2 500 word essay (30%)
Tutor: Dr Helga Luthersdottir, Mr Richard Cole, Ms Lucy Keens (contact email:h.luthersdottir@ucl.ac.uk)
Preparatory reading and set texts:
- Snorri Sturluson’s mythological treatise Gylfaginning, in the edition by A. Faulkes (London, 1988).
- A New Introduction to Old Norse II. Reader, ed. A. Faulkes (London, 2001).
In Term 2, we will look in detail at Snorra Edda, the most important source for Norse mythology, and we will begin to read some Norse poetry (both eddic and skaldic).
