Spanish Language 1
Course code: SPAN1001.
Course unit value: 1.00.
This is a post A-level course. Please note that there is no ab initio language teaching in this Department.
The first year language course consists of four main elements: Prose, Comprehension, Oral and Grammar.
Students will be assessed on coursework, a three hour written paper and an oral examination.
Assessment: one unseen three-hour written examination (70%); one oral examination (20%); coursework including comprehension, prose, oral presentations and an essay (10%).

Preparatory reading and set texts:
You are strongly advised to purchase John Butt & Carmen Benjamin, A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish (London: Arnold, 3rd ed. 2000), as well as a Collins or Oxford Spanish-English / English-Spanish dictionary.
Other language resources students should consult on a regular basis include: the Real Academia Española for peninsular Spanish and the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas for some of the main South American varieties.
