Background to Dante and Inferno
Course code: ITAL1105.
Course unit value: 0.5.
Introductory lectures, in the first half of the first term, on Dante’s life and times will be followed by readings from the text itself. Students will be required to study the whole canticle, though passages for commentary in the examination will be drawn from the following cantos: 1, 4, 5, 10, 13, 15, 19, 26, 27, 33 and 34. Particular attention will be paid to basic comprehension, leading ideas, style and overall structure in the canticle. This course is essential preparation for second- and final-year options on Dante.
Assessment: one unseen two-hour written examination (100%).
Tutor: Professor John Took.
Preparatory reading and set texts: will be circulated at the first lecture.
