The Making of Modern France
Course code: FREN1101.
Course unit value: 0.5.
The aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the key historical events which have shaped modern France, and to develop their critical and essay-writing skills. It will examine documents relating to the Revolution, the Dreyfus Affair and the decolonization of Algeria, and encourage students to question the discursive and rhetorical forms which shaped these historical debates. Students will attend a weekly lecture followed by a seminar. The course looks at the historical context and explores the social, political and symbolic significance of the events. It also incorporates an element of peer-editing which will ask students to reflect upon and improve their own writing practices.
Assessment: one unseen two-hour written examination (100%). Satisfactory completion of the coursework is normally a prerequisite for examination entry.
Tutor: Dr Kevin Inston.
