Established in 1828 and held by Antonio Alcalá Galiano, the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies was home to the first chair of Spanish in the UK. Housed in the School of European Languages, Culture & Society, our staff are specialists in Hispanic, Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian literature, film and culture. We also run an annual documentary film-making summer school in Cuba, host an annual international film festival and sponsor a documentary film-making project, the highly-acclaimed Rio Film School, in Rio de Janeiro.
