Scholarship Information for Research Students 2013-14
Scholarships for all research student awards are administered centrally by the School. The procedures below apply to candidates who have or propose to have a member of SELCS academic staff as a first supervisor or, in the case of joint supervision (50/50), who have or propose to have at least one member of SELCS academic staff as a supervisor.
Available Awards
SELCS, CIS and CES invite applications for the following awards:
- UCL Provost’s SELCS Research Student Teaching Assistantships. Two awards. Eligible fields of proposed study: ‘Trauma’, ‘Visual Culture’, ‘The Book’ or ‘Memory’, broadly interpreted. Value: £5,000 per annum for 2 or 3 years.
- UCL Wolfson Scholarships. Eligibility: candidates intending to study for a research degree in history, literature and languages. Value: full three-year scholarships covering fees and maintenance. For details, see the Faculty webpage Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarship in the Humanities.
- UCL Graduate School Research Scholarships (GRS). Eligibility: candidates intending to study for a research degree in one of the following departments: SELCS (comprising Dutch, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian and Spanish), CES or CIS (comprising Comparative Literature, Film Studies, Gender Studies, and Translation Studies). SELCS, CIS and CES are each permitted to make up to three GRS nominations. UCL Graduate Research Scholarships.
- UCL Overseas Research Studentships (ORS). Eligibility: overseas students only. Value: the scholarship covers the difference between overseas and home fees. For details, see the UCL Registry webpage UCL Overseas Research Scholarships.
- Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research studentships. Eligibility: students intending to undertake a research degree with a first or at least one joint supervisor in either the French or Italian or Spanish Department. One studentship is available for each of these three departments. Value: full three-year scholarship covering fees and maintenance for home students; fees only for EU students. - UCL Impact Scholarships. Matching funding required; for details, see the webpage Impact awards.
- UCL Faculty (of Arts and Humanities) Institute of Graduate Studies (FIGS) Postgraduate Research Studentships. Eligibility: open. Value £5,000 per annum. For details, see the Faculty of Arts webpage Postgraduate research studentships
- UCL Global Excellence Graduate Scholarship. Eligibility: open. Value £5,000 for one year. For details see the UCL webpage Global Excellence Graduate Scholarship webpage.
Deadlines & Applications
Deadlines and application procedure
All matters concerning the scholarships mentioned above are handled by the SELCS Research Officer, Novella Mercuri. Before submitting a scholarship application form or notifying the School that they wish to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must have applied for a place as a UCL research student via UCL Admissions. Ideally, they should already have been offered a place on their intended doctoral programme of study. The paragraphs below indicate the documents that candidates need to submit to the SELCS Research Officer in addition to the UCL Admissions application form.
- UCL
Provost’s SELCS Research Student Teaching Assistantships. Deadline: 4.00
pm on Friday 18 January 2013. Applicants for the SELCS Teaching Assistantship intending to
begin a research degree in October 2013 should submit a copy of their UCL
application form, along with a 300-word description of their intended research
project, explaining how it fits within the broad field of either ‘Trauma’
or ‘Visual Culture’ or ‘The Book’ or ‘Memory’. Applicants commencing the
second year of their research degree in October 2013 should submit a copy
of their original UCL application, together with a letter from their first
supervisor or one of their joint supervisors confirming that they have progressed
successfully in their first year of study. COMPETITION NOW CLOSED
- UCL Wolfson Scholarships. Candidates should write to the SELCS Research Officer indicating that they are eligible and wish to be considered for this award. Deadline: 4.00 pm on Friday 18 January 2013. COMPETITION NOW CLOSED
- UCL Graduate School Research Scholarships (GRS). Deadline: 4.00pm on Friday 1 February 2013. Applicants should submit a completed GRS application form, downloadable from the Graduate School website. COMPETITION NOW CLOSED
- UCL Overseas Research Studentships (ORS). Deadline: 4.00pm on Friday 1 February 2013. Applicants complete the ORS application form downloadable from the Graduate School webpage indicated above. COMPETITION NOW CLOSED
- Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) research studentships. Deadline: 4.00pm on Friday 1 February 2013. Applicants for the AHRC studentships intending to begin their research degree in October 2013 should submit only a copy of their UCL application form. Applicants who will be commencing the second year of their research degree in October 2013 must submit a copy of their original UCL application, together with a letter from their first supervisor or one of their joint supervisors confirming that they have progressed successfully in their first year of study. Faculty (of Arts and Humanities) Institute of Graduate Studies

should write to the SELCS Research Officer confirming that they are
eligible and wish to be considered for this award. They must also submit a copy of their UCL application form.
- UCL Global Excellence Graduate Scholarship. Deadline: 4.00pm on Friday 22 March 2013. Candidates should write to the SELCS Research Officer confirming that they are eligible and wish to be considered for this award. They must also submit a copy of their UCL application form.
Selection
Selection procedure
All applications, irrespective of specialization or supervisor, are considered by the SELCS Panel for Research Student Scholarships (hereafter ‘the Panel’), comprising the following members:
- The SELCS Research Director (Chair)
- The SELCS Director
- The Heads of SELCS Departments or their delegates.
- Representatives from each of the interdisciplinary CIS and CES programmes
- One member of academic staff from a department outside SELCS nominated by the SELCS Research Director.
Interviews
Interviews are held for AHRC studentships and Wolfson scholarships only.
AHRC studentship interview dates:
- French 2.00-4.30 pm on Tuesday 19 March 2013
- Italian 2.00-4.30 pm on Wednesday 20 March 2013
- Spanish 2.00-4.30 pm on Thursday 21 March 2013
The interview panels consist of the Panel, as defined in the preceding tab. In addition, potential supervisors of candidates invited to an interview may attend the interview of such candidates, with the approval of the Panel Chair.
