Research funds
For small expenses, up to £200, research students should complete the downloadable Small Research Expenses form. Once it has been signed by the student's research supervisor and the School Director, it should be delivered to Tessa Rickards in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Office.
Three sources for larger research expenses or travel costs are available to research students:
- The UCL Graduate School Research Projects Fund and Student Conference Fund. Particulars and downloadable application forms are available on these pages of the Graduate School's website. In the first instance, research students should normally apply for partial funding from the Graduate School. Applicants should complete the Graduate School application form, explaining the proposed travel or research costs, and then take it to the School Director, who will write a short statement in support. The student should then take the signed application to Tessa Rickards in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Office. The Faculty forwards the applications to a panel, which determines the matching contribution that the Faculty will make if the application to Graduate School is successful. The panel completes the relevant section of the application form, notifies Tessa Rickards of their decision and returns the application form to the applicant. If the panel has agreed that the Faculty should make a matching contribution, the applicant delivers the completed form to the Graduate School. If the Graduate School rejects the application, the applicant should resubmit the completed Graduate School application to the Faculty, indicating that their application to the Graduate School has been unsuccessful. Applicants do not need to complete a Faculty application form. The panel will in due course determine the Faculty's contribution to the expenses.
- The UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities's Postgraduate Research Student Travel Funds. The Faculty's page has links to the particulars and a downloadable application form. Research students should apply to the UCL Graduate School in the first instance, as explained in the previous paragraph. Unsuccessful applicants may then apply to the Arts and Humanities Funds as, again, explained above.
- The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Study Visit and Conference Fund. The AHRC Research Council Study Visit and Conference Fund is for AHRC funded research students only.
Applications should always be submitted and approved before incurring research or travel expenses.
